Dr. Jason Thoms is the Director of Choral Activities at Concordia College - NY in Bronxville, NY.   At Concordia, Jason conducts the renowned Concordia Tour Choir and the Concordia Festival Choir.   This year the Tour Choir will perform throughout the Southeast with concerts planned in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.   Before working at Concordia, Dr. Thoms worked at Central United Methodist Church in Fayetteville,Arkansas, was Director of the Ozark Chamber Singers and taught voice at the Northwest Arkansas Community College.  Jason is also a published composer (GIA), editor of early music, published educator (articles in the Chorister and Teach Music Journal) and a professional bass-baritone.

 

Dr. Thoms has taught at the secondary and undergraduate levels in California andMississippi, Arkansas and New York.  He has directed church choirs in Minnesota, Florida, Michigan, Mississippi and Arkansas. He has been conductor of festival choirs in Florida, California, Michigan, Mississippi Arkansas and New York, and has lead interest session as a clinician at the Mississippi State ACDA/MENC Convention in 2005, the Central UMC Music Ministry conference in both 2006 and 2007, and the Scola Cantorum at the Cade Center of Concordia College-NY in 2009.

 

In the past years Dr. Thoms reputation as a bass-baritone increased throughout the Eastern US.  He performes frequently as soloist in professional, collegiate, community concerts and local opera companies.  Recently, Jason had his Coarnegie Hall debut as soloist in the FaureRequiem with Dr. Anton Armstrong, conductor.  On May 19, 2009 Jason will have his Carnegie Hall conducting debut when the Concordia Tour Choir gives its Germnay Tour Home Concert in the Weill Recital Hall.  In January 2009 Jason will sing the role of Don Pasquale with the Westside Opera Society and in February Jason will creat the role of John Wilkes Booth for the World Premier of The Moustache in Annapolis, MD.   Jason has also recently sung the roles of : Marullo and Ceprano in Rigoletto, Sciarrone inTosca, Benoit and Alcindoro in La Boheme, and Masetto in Don Giovanni.   He has been bass soloist for Mozart’sVesperae Solennes De ConfessoreMass in F, Requiem, Grand Mass in C and Pilate and the bass solos in the Bach St. John Passion.

 

Dr. Thoms has studied choral conducting with Anton Armstrong, Robert Scholz, Charles K. Smith, David Rayl, Jonathan Reed and Simon Carrington, and instrumental conducting with Tim Mahr, Steven Amundson and Leon Gregorian.  He has studied voice with Tony Holt, Alison Feldt, James McKeel, Elaine Cencel, and Catherine Mazzone.
